DC Metro, DC’s Washington’s Liveliest Theatre Website just released Steven McKnight’s Top 10 professional shows of 2015. At number FOUR was Old Wicked Songs, starring PHIL HOSFORD, (Theatre Faculty.) Mr. Hosford’s was also chosen as one of the Outstanding Professional Theater Performances in Washington DC in 2015. “Old Wicked Songs is a skillfully written two-hander about an arrogant young pianist suffering from burnout who travels to Austria to study and try to regain his performing passion. The Jon Marans play beautifully melds politics with the personal and explores the teacher-student dynamic with loving affection. 1st Stage gave the moving Old Wicked Songs the top-notch revival it deserved.”
The National Chamber Ensemble’s Holiday Concert by J.M. Grieg
The National Chamber Ensemble never fails to delight, and the “Happy Holidays” concert on Saturday, December 12, 2015, provided a sparkling start to the holiday season, with works by Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Leroy Anderson, and others. The musicians of the National Chamber Ensemble were joined by guest artists and a group of talented young musicians. The concert
continued with a performance of the Adagio and Rondo Concertante, D.487 by Franz Schubert. Schubert’s only piano quartet, it is a brilliant work not unlike a mini piano concerto. The piece showcases the pianist, and NATASHA DUKAN, (Piano Faculty) played with virtuosity and feeling, supported perfectly by the rest of the ensemble. This was exciting music-making and brought calls of “Brava!” for Ms. Dukan from the appreciative audience

The 16th Annual Honors Competition for Academy private students is coming up in Spring of 2016! The competition is open to all Academy-only private students. For the competition, students prepare one piece to perform for an outside judge on musicality, technique, memorization, presentation. The levels of the participants range from beginners through advanced musicians. Although most participate as soloists, but chamber music is highly encouraged! There have been amazing chamber ensembles that have participated! The judge selects the winners to perform at a ticketed concert one week later. The performances are high quality (beginners and advanced), and it is always a musically satisfying and an emotional experience for the audience at the concert. Keep an eye out for the competition forms and information.
Admission to the monthly recitals is non-perishable food item for the Manna Food Pantry. The Academy has been contributing to this community food pantry for years. Even if you aren’t attending the recitals, feel free to drop off a donation in the front lobby. THANK YOU!

My name is Irene Guggenheim-Triana.
I have been studying at the Academy of Fine Arts for roughly a decade. I am a sophomore in the International Baccalaureate program at Richard Montgomery High School.
As part of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and in preparation for the Diploma Programme (DP), we do a project called the Personal Project. The Personal Project has a wide degree of flexibility regarding the subject, focusing more on the process.
For my personal project, I am conducting a series of video interviews with instrumentalists under the age of 18 on why they choose to play an instrument. My choice in project reflects the IB Global Context of Personal and Cultural expression, and some of my own personal goals. In the future, I hope to major in Music Education, and I would like this project to provide insight into different mindsets students have.
I am writing in hope of assistance in my venture. I would appreciate help in reaching out to students who may want to participate.
